Rubén Rivera was born August 16, 1961 in Bayamón, Puerto Rico.
He starts to learn drawing, painting and printmaking at an early age from his father, Rubén Rivera Aponte, who is a well known painter
and printmaker.
He begins to participate in collective art exhibitions in 1977. In 1981, the pencil drawing “Germination, Repression” wins first mention at the prestigious “Certamen de Artes Plásticas" sponsored by Revista Sin
Nombre. During the 1980’s he continues his work mostly through paintings
and pencil drawings, and he quickly develops his interest as an artist extending into portraiture, the human figure and landscapes, as well as
abstract drawing and painting. During this decade he also experiments with video art and begins his interest in animation and cinema.
In 1990 Rubén Rivera opens “Fuga Cinética, Inc.”, a non-digital, traditionally equipped animation studio, making many experimental
animated shorts as an independent animator. Among these, “Pandorascopio”,
“Detritus”
and “Crash” were presented in many animation
festivals. ”Pandorascopio” won first prize at “Cinextremos Film Festival” in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1996, Rubén wins the “Premio Al
Merito” given by the “Fondo Nacional Para el Financiamiento de Quehacer
Cultural, Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña” for his achievements as
an independent animator.
In 1998, after working in many forms of digital painting, graphic design
and animation for various companies, Rubén begins to concentrate on web
design and the artistic and multimedia possibilities of advanced digital
medium, developing additional skills in programs like Photoshop, Painter, Flash and Director.
Currently Rubén Rivera continues to work in many mediums, ranging from
traditional oil painting to interactive digital movies. |
